Cinema Obscura Recap " The City Of the Lost Children"
Cinema Obscura is our once a month filmprogram , researching our Festival theme “ Dream No Return” . With 10 + screenings we are looking how various filmmakers approached the idea of dreaming and its endless possibilies to translate it to the screen .
With our first Screening we showed the movie The City of Lost children . In a distopian future Dr. Krank , unable to dream himself , is kidnapping young children to steal their dreams.
The film is made by Marc Caro and Jean Pierre Jeunet with amazing music by Angelo Badalamenti.
In advance of the screening we went “crafty” . With a group of 15 people we build “devices” that we could wear and would connect our consciousness during the screening.
Ofcourse movies are a great medium to “hallucinate” together and connect us in various ways but we were looking to really create a physical connection that created full awareness of the other. Every movement of the group is collective felt and so would create a collective “dream” that would last until the film ends.
Just before we started the movie MArie would guide the audience through a dreamsceance. Asking the audience to close their eyes, reading out sentences , creating images in their head.
