Sickhouse Cinema: Nightmare on Elm Street

The second stop on Sickhouse’s dream travel: After visiting Oz, we now take a detour through hellfire and make a stop on Elm Street.
As we continue exploring the boundaries, influences, and impacts that dreams can have on our world, we dive into the world of nightmares. A Nightmare on Elm Street is considered a masterpiece and a classic of horror cinema — a must-see for any film lover. Made on a very low budget, the film manages to create a truly terrifying atmosphere while also being, at times, ridiculous, campy, trashy, and wonderfully bizarre.
Nightmare on Elm Street marks the beginning of what would become a long series of Freddy Krueger films — but this first installment is by far the best of the series (in our opinion)!
Synopsis: In the small town of Springwood, teenagers begin to experience horrifying nightmares featuring a disfigured man with a bladed glove — Freddy Krueger. When they fall asleep, Freddy stalks and kills them in their dreams, and their deaths in the dream world have real consequences in the waking world. Desperate to survive, a group of teens led by Nancy Thompson tries to uncover the dark secret behind Freddy’s power and the sins of their parents' past that unleashed him. As sleep becomes increasingly dangerous, staying awake is the only way to stay alive.
Sickhouse Cinema is our dedicated film program. Following the theme that guides Sickhouse’s annual research, we seek out classics, cult films, experimental works, B-movies, midnight screenings, and glorious trash that add to the exploration of the theme. Each screening is accompanied by a side program where we joke, chat, and experience the films together.
